Spooky and Slightly Scary Book List

The weather has turned chilly, and it’s time for curling up by the fire with books.

Is anyone else getting prepared to hibernate for the winter? My most important supplies for winter are a giant stack of books, fuzzy socks, and a big mug of hot tea.

And now that I have a teen and some pre-teens, they want some mysterious and slightly spooky stories to enjoy by the fireside as they snuggle under blankets and watch the leaves change from green to flaming red.

I created a fun list of spine-tingling spooky stories filled with chilling characters and curious plot twists. There are even a few ghost stories.

If you’re looking for something scary to spice up your October, this is your reading list!

Be advised that some of the stories are fairly scary and contain mysteries that involve a murder. I highly recommend pre-reading these books if you have a sensitive child. Pre-read, research, and know your children and their sensitivity levels to these types of stories – that’s my little disclaimer.

No on to the list!

Doll Bones

The Graveyard Book

The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls

The Night Gardener by Auxier

The Year of Shadows

Small Spaces

The Jumbies

A Tale Dark and Grimm

The House in Poplar Wood

  1. This book list looks great! My son loves reading spooky stories that take you right to the edge but don’t cross the line so these sound wonderful. I think the first one I’ll try to check out is Nightbooks – it sounds perfect for October 🙂

    1. I hope you enjoy! A couple of my older kids now like slightly spooky books so I created this book list to give them some scary fall reads. I tried to find ones that are not too scary or gory.
