Cake Decorating Art

Today we decided to pretend to be cake decorators.  We made a paste using 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and food coloring.  We made 4 batches of this mix and put each one into a baggie.

Then we added about 5 Tablespoons of water per bag and the kids enjoyed squishing the ingredients together.

I cut a small hole in the tip of each bag, and the kids piped their colored paste onto plates.

When they were done we put each plate in the microwave for about 30-50 seconds and let the paste dry out.  We were left with fun puffy paint.  (This project would also work well with squeeze bottles if you have those on hand).

  1. This looks like a lot of fun. I have decorated cakes for years & have taught children of all ages. Most kids love decorating & I usually start them out on a plate.

  2. It was fun and very messy. If my kids were a little older I might buy disposable piping bags and let them work with those. But the ziplocs were easy for them to handle. I also think squeezable bottles would work well also.
